Andrew Goodwin in Dancing In The Distraction Factory (1992 Routledge), has identified the following features of music videos-
1. Music videos demonstrate genre charateristics
e.g. stage performance in mental video, dance routine for boy/girl band.
2. There is a relationship between lyrics and visuals ( illustrative, amplifying, contradicting )
illustrative- mirrow exactly what they say in the song. example- The Script
amplifying- Expresses and over exaggerate the music. example- Stan Eminem
contradicting- Having the opposite to the song. example- Sad song- happy, smily people in song.
3. There is a relationship between music and visuals.
4. The demands of the record label will include the need for lots of close-ups of the artist and the artist may develop motifs which recur across thier work.
- How revelant is this upload on You Tube?
example- associated the same image (Lady Gaga)
5. There is freqently reference to the notio of looking (screens with screens, telescopes, etc) and particulary and particularly voyeuristic treatment of the female body.
6. There is often intertexual references (to films, TV programmes, other music videos, etc)
